Once a renowned beauty spot favoured by Sir Walter Scott, Robert Burns and numerous Covenanters intent on not being seen, the gorge is sadly now all but impassable, with a recent landslip dumping a piece of sandstone as big as a house into the ravine. The sure-footed, however, are rewarded with an incredible landscape of water, wood and stone, and the names of those who walked here centuries ago, beautifully carved into the walls of this magical scar in the land.
